"A rich collection of mementos came my way as I researched this book. Aside from photos that brought people to life, I received physical objects that tied me to my grandparents. One German woman gave me a yo-yo stamped with the name of our family store, Kaufhaus Schönwald. In Jerusalem, I found a Gestapo record of my grandparents’ transport to a Polish labor camp. I unearthed a letter, written by my father’s cousin, enabling my father to gain admission to the United States."
